Wandering Minds: Navigating the world of international travel and wellbeing – part 6

I am delighted to have you join me here!

Coping in an insane world?

I recently put out the above post on my social media, as it seems that so many of us are struggling to understand what is going on in the world. Wherever we look, there is a sense of chaos. So, how can we all stay sane in what appears to be an insane world? Is it really that bad? Or can we still find inner calm and peace whatever else is happening?

In the book “Brans at the Border” I discussed staying safe when travelling abroad and I related my own experiences  visiting conflict zones during my overseas adventures with the UK Foreign Office. A short follow up to that book, “Fresh Frontiers”, is available as a free download on my site and explores some of the future challenges we all need to consider now and how we can find ways to keep going in tough times. Do you have your copy yet?

In a global society we need to be mindful wherever we are. We need to keep up to date with what is going on, however the news media always highlights the negative stories and ignores the good. We need to visualise and focus more strongly on the positive things we want to see and hear!

What is the problem?

The world has always been a full of contrast and conflict. History is full of invasions, wars, death and destruction, abuse, poverty, disease, and catastrophe. I would argue that we are now simply living a more modern version. The media and internet have enabled us to shine a light on the root causes of our suffering. Old power systems and structures are crumbling at a great pace. It seems like chaos as we have no clarity as to what might be replacing them, and concerns that we may all be taken over by A.I!  However, everything takes time and a caterpillar turns into mush before a butterfly emerges!

People are being asked to change their way of life, and question everything they see and hear. Propaganda material and “deep fake” images, plus corruption and other scandals being revealed mean that we never know who or what to believe anymore.  There have been shocks and surprises most recently with politics in the USA, UK, and over this last weekend’s EU elections, as well as in South Africa and Mexico. The Ukraine- Russia war and conflict between Israel and Gaza rage on.  Will China and Taiwan be next?  There are already so many displaced people on the move and there is also so much polarisation.

The knock-on effects of these worldwide events show up for us all in some way. It can mean supply chain issues, fuel price hikes, housing shortages, increased street crime, workers’ strikes, online scams, cost of living and mental health crises, health care and other services on the point of collapse – and so on and so on.

Staying safe in an unsafe world involves a combination of awareness, preparation, and practical actions. Here are some strategies to help us scope – both at home or away – and remember, happiness is ultimately “an inside job” with a positive mental attitude!

So, what can we do?

  – Look after yourself first or you will be no help to others.  It is why the airline staff instruct you to put on your own oxygen mask first.

– Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep strengthen your body and mind, enhancing your ability to handle stress and react in emergencies.

– Prioritize self-care and time for yourself. Practice mindfulness, meditation, or other relaxation techniques. Engage in hobbies and activities that bring you joy and relaxation.

– Be grateful for what you do have.  Some people did not wake up this morning.  Many people do not have food and clean water. There is always something to be thankful for.

– Maintain good relationships with friends, family, and support groups.  Limit exposure to negative influences and toxic relationships.

  – Get to know your neighbours and consider joining a neighbourhood watch programme. Stay connected with local resources and community.

– Keep up with news and alerts from reliable sources about local and global events. Be aware of scams and threats in your area – but look for the good news stories too!

– Be conscious of your surroundings, especially in unfamiliar or crowded places. Trust your instincts; if something feels off, leave.

   – Be firm about your personal space and what makes you feel comfortable. Learn to say no and remove yourself from uncomfortable situations.

– Always carry your mobile phone. Have a list of emergency contacts and local emergency numbers.

. – Avoid sharing personal information online and on social media. Be wary of phishing scams and malicious links.  Create complex passwords.  Keep your PC software and antivirus programs up to date.

   – Install sturdy locks on doors and windows. Consider a security system with cameras and alarms on your home / business premises.

   – Have a plan for natural disasters, including a safe meeting place and a kit bag and cupboard with essentials. Know basic first aid and keep a well-stocked first aid kit.

   – Research your travel destination, including local customs, laws, and areas to avoid.   Check the security advice from your embassy about travel to any overseas location.

   – Stay in well-reviewed accommodations and use trusted transportation services. Keep copies of important documents (passport, insurance) in a safe place. Keep your valuables secure.

By combining these strategies, and putting everything into a broad perspective, you can significantly enhance your personal safety and well-being in an unpredictable world!
